Wednesday, Sep 16 2009 - These six stars are "Divas" by definition

What defines a diva? Her strength, say the six women who will share the stage Thursday night for VH1's Divas concert (9 ET/PT).

"Divas have gotten a bad rap, like it's supposed to mean that you're demanding and crazy," says Jordin Sparks. "But a diva is really someone who can just captivate an audience with her voice."

It's a person who's bigger than life," says Miley Cyrus. "Someone who's really empowered," adds Leona Lewis.

"And big hair is important," Adele quips.

In conversations conducted shortly before their Divas date, the singers — Adele and Lewis chatting via one conference call, Sparks and Kelly Clarkson on another, and Jennifer Hudson and Cyrus in separate phone interviews — discuss why they're upending their schedules to team up on live television.

Hudson, 28, and Clarkson, 27, both have vivid memories of watching the first installation of Divas, which featured the aforementioned Franklin, Carey and Dion, as well as Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain. Sparks, 19, admits, "I was a little bit younger, so I couldn't stay up long enough to watch it."

Brits Adele, 21, and Lewis, 24, are proud to represent musicians from across the pond. "Being from the U.K., it's definitely an honor to be asked," Lewis says. Adele is looking forward to meeting American peers such as Sparks and Cyrus. "I met Miley once, but I stuttered a bit because I think she's so amazing."

Idol alumnae Clarkson and Sparks are eager to see an old friend, host Paula Abdul, who won't return for Idol's ninth season. "I can't wait to give her a big hug," Clarkson says.

On one point, at least, the divas are in complete agreement: The atmosphere will be in no way competitive or catty.

"We've obviously all met people like that, but none of us are," Clarkson insists. "I love all these girls, and I think people will be excited to see us together. They won't be trying to figure out who's best."

Sunday, Sep 13 2009 - Jordin Sparks: The Gig before Gig

Before Jordin Sparks helped open Saturday night’s Britney Spears’ concert at the Alerus Center, she sang another more personal tune as she led about 80 family members and friends in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for her great-grandfather, Jim Rutherford of Fargo.

Rutherford, who turned 87 a few days ago, and Sparks’ grandparents, Jim and Pam (Rutherford) Wiedmann, joined Sparks on Saturday afternoon for a meet-and-greet with family and friends at UND’s J. Lloyd Stone Alumni Center.

The first floor of the house was filled with friends and relatives from Grand Forks, Grafton, Drayton, Nash, Park River, N.D., and beyond, including Rutherfords, Wiedmanns, Gillishammers, Meaghers, Brosseaus and more.

Sparks greeted her beaming family members with hugs and smiles, introducing herself, her grandparents, her great-grandfather and her dog, Maggie, and then posed for family photos before visiting for a few minutes.

Although her set was small, her voice was mighty, preparing the stage for Jordin Sparks, the Season 6 winner of "American Idol." The 19-year-old, with the help of five backup singers, entertained with hits including "One Step at a Time," "Tattoo" and her new single, "S.O.S."

Sparks also asked for a moment of silence to remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks of 2001.

Tuesday, Sep 08 2009 - Jordin Sparks recalls meeting Britney Spears at 2008 VMAs

MTV.com: Before last September, Jordin Sparks had never been to the VMAs and had never met current tourmate Britney Spears. So, when she found out she was seated near Spears at the 2008 Video Music Awards, she knew it was her chance to speak up and have some time with the star.

First, she had to get over being nervous to be in the very presence of Britney. "Well, I didn't say anything," Sparks told MTV News. "I [didn't] know what to say, 'cause it was her big comeback thing. She was nominated for however many [awards], and she looked beautiful, and I was like, 'Aaah!' "

Though she was starstruck, Jordin couldn't help but feel a little jealous when Britney's "Piece of Me" beat her "No Air" in the Best Female Video category last year. "She did [beat me], and I was very sad," she said. "I was like, come on, she already has three of them, at least give me one."

But Sparks' mother wasn't about to allow her to miss the opportunity to meet the pop princess. "My mom had to ask her for a picture," the "Idol" winner admitted. "My mom was with me, 'cause I couldn't do it. I was like, 'Mom, I cannot ask her for this picture.' "

Sparks said Spears at first seemed reluctant to take the photo. "Then Larry [Rudolph], who is her manager, was like, 'She's on your label; you're going to want to take the picture.' And I was like, 'Cool!' " she said. "And I understand too because she wanted to sit and watch. But we got to take the picture!"

Friday, Sep 04 2009 - Jordin Sparks: Having the time of her life

You'd think that Jordin Sparks is used to fame and success by now, but the 19-year-old singer says she's still in awe as to how far she has come. And she has come a long way.

Before even the thought of taking part in American Idol came about, Sparks had already won a number of talent competitions, including the Gospel Music Association's Sprite Rising Star Award; America's Most Talented Kids; Colgate Country Showdown and the Drug Free Arizona Superstar Search. In her home state of Arizona, Sparks also picked up the Best Young Artist award for three years running.

All this, of course, paled in comparison to her spectacular win in 2007 when the then 17-year-old won top honours in American Idol making her the youngest victor in the nation's No. 1 show.

On the heels of her win, Sparks released her self-titled debut album, which went on to sell over 1.6 million copies worldwide earning her efforts a platinum status spot. The album also spawned three Top 5 hits (Tattoo, No Air and One Step At A Time) on Billboard’s Pop singles chart. Cumulatively, the singles sold almost nine million downloads.

In a year of winning America's biggest singing competition, completing a series of tours, both in the U.S. and internationally, Sparks went on to win an American Music Award for Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist. She also received two MTV Video Music Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female Video. And icing on her cake at this year's Grammy's was a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for No Air.

Not one to sit on her laurels – this year Sparks launched her own clothing line, plus she has been on tour with the Jonas Brothers – just this July, she returned to the charts with her second album, Battlefield.

What is your favorite song to perform?

Being able to perform my own music is amazing in itself and I love to perform all of my songs but I would have to say that until my fans get familiar with my new material, it would have to be my three hits. Tattoo, No Air and One Step At A Time.

Do you have a favourite song?

I love Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey. It will always be one of my favourites. It brings me back to sitting in the car with the windows rolled down and my dad and me singing at the top of our lungs.

Any favourite Michael Jackson number?

Man In the Mirror is one of those classic Michael Jackson songs I can listen to over and over and over.

What is your favorite track on the new album?

Well, I love all of them or else they wouldn’t be in the album. I think the songs I wrote have more of a meaning to me. Out of those I’d have to say Faith. I was literally crying when I recorded it. It was one of those songs where it was and is going to touch the people who need to be touched. I love performing it as well.

Tell us why you picked Faith?

We wrote this song a couple of days before the inauguration of the President of the United States and we were thinking about everything going on in the world. There is a feeling of hopelessness and I felt that if there was on person who said it was going to be okay … the world would be a better place.

What has been the most memorable moment for you on tour with the Jonas Brothers?

(Laughs) Beside being on tour with them? Probably the silly string war we had. It only lasted a few days but it was so fun. Also the fact that they are so encouraging and supportive to me and the other acts. We’re all about the same age, so we joke around a lot. We’re all in this together...fame anyway. It’s amazing to be around people who are going through the same thing.

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer?

Swim, play with my dogs, spend time with family and read. I’m easy.

You have an amazing voice, what techniques do you use to keep your voice so strong?

I’m still learning but I try not to talk too much. Especially right after a show. Drinking lots of tea. Try throat coat or yogi tea throat comfort. Grether's pastilles work wonders as well.

Where is your favorite place to travel and is there anywhere you haven’t been that you would like to visit?

As of right now, home is where I like to be because I’m never there! I would love to visit Japan.

Many of your fans look to you as a role model, do you feel pressure with every decision you make because of how people will view you?

It’s a good pressure but I do have to watch where I go, who I talk to, different things like that. It’s nice though, it keeps me in check.

Thursday, Sep 03 2009 - Throwing Sparks

Singing star Jordin Sparks grew up in Glendale, Ariz., but has roots in the Red River Valley. And when you talk to her, you can hear the sparkle, smarts and good sense that define so many bright young women from North Dakota and Minnesota.

At 19, Sparks is friendly and articulate. You don’t hear many teenage “ums” and “likes” when she speaks. She’s funny and laughs easily, enthusiastic and polite. For a young woman who was jettisoned into stardom as an “American Idol” champion and has toured with the Jonas Brothers, she is so not full of herself.

“I’m so, so, so excited to be in North Dakota,” she said about her Sept. 12 appearance in Grand Forks, when she and Kristinia Debarge will open for the Britney Spears “Circus” concert tour in the Alerus Center.

Sparks has been singing since she was a baby. Recently, her family found an old videotape of her, sitting on her grandmother’s lap, singing all the words to “Jingle Bells” with perfect pitch. She was 18 months old.

Sparks’ maternal grandparents are Fargo native Jim Wiedeman, a UND graduate, and Pam (Rutherford) Wiedeman, who grew up in Hillsboro, N.D., and who was Jordin’s manager until Jordin entered TV’s star-making “American Idol” competition in 2007. Her great-grandfather, Jim Rutherford, lives in Fargo.

Until last week she was touring with the Jonas Brothers.

“I haven’t seen the ‘Circus’ show yet,” Sparks said Aug. 28. “I’ll see it next week, and I can‘t wait. I met (Britney) last year at an awards show, and we took a picture, but we didn’t get to talk.”

Meanwhile, Jordin’s future is looking good. On Sept. 17, she is one of several singers signed up for the re-launch of the “VH1 Divas” concert. She’s looking forward to the next round of Grammy nominations, she’d love to do some acting (especially on Broadway), and someday, say 10 or 12 years from now, have “a significant other,” she said.

“But ultimately, I just want to be happy,” she said. Here’s the Herald interview with Sparks, edited for length:

Q. The first news item the Herald ever ran about you that I could find was published on Jan. 17, 2005. It was a link to your Web site. At the time, you were 15 and about to be featured on “America’s Most Talented Kids.” You’ve been at this singing thing for a while, haven’t you?

A. I love singing. It’s all I ever wanted to do when I was little, and it’s all I want to do now. I was doing competitions and doing anything I could to just get out there and sing.

A. Actually, both are really amazing in their own right. With “American Idol,” I was such a humongous fan. I was an “Idol” junkie from the first season. To be part of it was phenomenal. The Britney tour is surreal for me because I never in a million years thought I would be opening for her.

Q. What was your reaction when you learned you’d be opening some Britney shows?

A. It was shock. You don’t expect to get a phone call saying, “Do you want to open for Britney Spears?” It’s like — “What?” I said I’m not going to pass up this opportunity.

Q. We’ve heard a lot about Britney’s show, about the costume changes and dozens of dancers and acrobats and the pole dancing. What will your part of the show be like? Are you planning a lot of costume changes or pole dancing?

A. No! (Laughing) No pole dancing at all, I promise. I am an opener, so I have about 25 minutes on stage. So, I don’t have a costume change. I have my background singers and keyboardist. I just try to put a whole lot of energy into the show and my whole self into the performance. But definitely no pole dancing.

Q. You’ve been a star a while now. As a young woman in the music business, tell us about what you see as the pitfalls to avoid, and what are some of the things that you see are important to success.

A. I think one of the biggest things is to always be yourself and to remember you have your family at home waiting for you. It’s easy to get caught up in this life. I’ve been touring for three years, since “American Idol,” and the crazy thing is how accessible things are. You can ask for anything, and it’s there. And I can see how you can get caught up in things. I have friends on tour with me who are going to tell me the truth. They’ll tell you if an outfit looks horrible on you, or if your head is getting too big. It’s important to have them and to know they’ve got your back.

Q. As an artist, your goal is to become famous and get your music out to the most people possible. But what about the other side? How do you handle the paparazzi and the tabloid coverage? And are there any news reports out there right now you’d like to dispel?

A. You know how you see Britney surrounded with 100 paparazzi? I never get that. It’s how you deal with them. If you’re nice to them, they’re nice when they see you. It’s a small world. You keep seeing the same paparazzi guys in the same places. So, it’s like, “Hey, how are you doing?” It’s definitely a little crazy, but they’ve been pretty nice to me so far. The tabloids, too. Last year a tabloid said I was married. But other than that…

Q. Tell us about the “VH1 Divas” show you’ll be doing next month.

A. I got added to that, which I am so excited about. I am stoked. It’s gonna be me, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Miley Cyris and Kelly Clarkson, so there will be a couple of “Idol” people. (Hudson and Clarkson both are “Idol” alums.) And (ex-“Idol” judge) Paula (Abdul) also is hosting it. And I can’t wait to see her and give her a big hug because I adore her.

Q. You really have an amazing life right now, don’t you?

A. I am very blessed. I have to step back and say, “I can’t believe this is really happening.”

Tuesday, Sep 01 2009 - Will Ferrell , Jordin Sparks perform at Arthur Ashe Kids' Day

The stadium show featured live tennis matches and a concert. The participants included actor/comedian Will Ferrell, “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks, the band Honor Society, pop performer Justin Bieber and tennis stars Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, James Blake, Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanonic.

Sparks said that her manager had been talking to her about taking part in Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, and she wanted to do it, particularly because former event participants The Jonas Brothers told her how much fun it while she was on tour with them.

“I’ve been a huge fan of sports ever since I was little so to be able to have an event for kids where they get to look up and meet their favorite sports stars is so phenomenal,” Sparks said. “You could have the next Andy Roddick, you could have the next Serena or Venus Williams here. It could take this one day to be like ‘hey, you can do it, you can be the next star’ to make them go ‘okay, I’ll do this for the rest of my life.’”

Friday, Aug 28 2009 - Jordin Sparks would love to sing at Kevin Jonas's Wedding

MTV: Although Jordin Sparks, who recently became one of the opening acts on Britney Spears' Circus tour, has yet to get her invite in the mail to Kevin Jonas' possible winter wedding to Danielle Deleasa, she's already planning what she might sing if Kevin decided to hire her as the wedding singer.

"Maybe I'll be their wedding singer — who knows? That would be crazy," Sparks, who toured with the Jonas Brothers over the summer, told MTV News. "So, maybe I'll get invited, and if I don't, it's OK."

But Sparks does have a song in mind for the wedding — a girl has to be prepared for all scenarios! "I'd sing 'Lovebug' ... I'm just kidding," she joked. "Actually, my friend Gina from 'Idol' got married, and she asked me to sing at her wedding, and she had me sing 'I Want To Hold Your Hand,' but the one from 'Across the Universe.' It's a lot slower and a lot more different, so I might sing that."

Sparks also revealed that Deleasa is starting to get used to her fiancé's hectic schedule. She's already hit the road with Nick, Joe and Kevin, and Sparks couldn't be happier for the couple. "I know that she comes in and she'll be on the tour for a little while, and you can just really tell that they're in love. And they're so cute, so all the congratulations. I love you guys. Wednesday, Aug 26 2009 - Jordin Sparks embraces natural beauty

US singing sensation Jordin Sparks has recommended people chose skin care products according to their skin type.

The star, who rose to fame after appearing on the reality show American Idol, said choosing the correct products for an individual's skin type is absolutely crucial.

She said: "Drink lots of water and find the right skin care products, especially when you have dry skin in some spots and oily in others, like me."

Sparks added that she enjoys doing her own makeup before performances as it helps her to relax and calm down before the rigours of a live show.

Paying special attention to eyelashes and applying two layers of mascara is also recommended by the natural beauty star.

Wednesday, Aug 26 2009 - Jordin Sparks 'Can't Wait' to reunite with Paula at VH1 Divas

MTV: Jordin Sparks will be joining previously announced divas Miley Cyrus, Adele, Kelly Clarkson and Leona Lewis at the revamped VH1 Divas concert September 17. Sparks said she would love the opportunity to put her own spin on Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." for the show.

"You know what? I would take 'Party in the U.S.A.' in a second," she told MTV News. "I would take it in a heartbeat. I love that song."

The "American Idol" champ said she'll be singing a hit or two of her own for the show and would love the chance to collaborate onstage with one of the newbie divas or even an established diva, including her three favorite: Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera.

"I think it would be really cool if we all could sing a song together. I know the moment I try and out-sing somebody else, I will sound horrible," she joked. "I was hoping that I could sing with somebody as well. I named a few people like Mariah [Carey] and Whitney [Houston], but that's probably not going to happen.

"I'm so stoked," she continued. "I remember hearing about the Divas shows and watching them when I could, but I usually had to go to sleep when I was in school so I couldn't usually watch them. ... I'm so excited. It's going to be so much fun."

The night will also reunite the singer with former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, who will be the night's host. Sparks is definitely looking forward to sharing the stage with Abdul again. "I'm so excited to see her. I can't wait to give her a huge hug," she said. "I love Paula."

Wednesday, Aug 26 2009 - Britney Spears Tour 'Intimidating' for Jordin Sparks

MTV: It's been quite a busy summer for Jordin Sparks. Right after wrapping up a stint opening for the Jonas Brothers, she hit the road with Britney Spears for her Circus tour — needless to say, it's been a whirlwind few weeks for the "American Idol" winner.

"It was a little intimidating, just because it's such a different crowd than the Jonas crowd," she told MTV News as she made her way over to Madison Square Garden for the her third night on Britney's tour. "And you go to a Britney concert and it's all of her fans and they have grown up ... but if they scream, they're screaming 'cause they want to. They don't scream at just anything, so when I took that stage and I could hear a little bit through that they were excited and that I wasn't so out of place, it was awesome."

Sparks only got the call to join Britney a couple of weeks ago, and even though she barely had time to rehearse, she couldn't say no. "The night before the Britney tour, we went into this ... little warehouse, drew a big circle of chalk and just tried to put some stuff together — and once we got on that stage it just sort of fell together," she said. "We still have some stuff to work on ... we walked off the stage like, 'We hope people liked it.' "

Sparks has yet to meet Britney or even catch her set, but hopes that will change as the busy tour continues.

"Well, I know they all have to get their hair and makeup done and there's dancer after dancer ... I haven't seen Britney yet, but I heard she's doing really well," Sparks said. "I haven't gotten to watch her show yet either. ... I've seen all the dancers and they've got cloaks on [so that people don't see what they're wearing] and they're just walking around everywhere."

Tuesday, Aug 25 2009 - Cirus Show: Leather Masks , Trampolines and Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks debuted on the Circus tour last night, and she came out like she owned the place. The girl has more bona fide smash hits than some artists twice her age, and she flaunted each and every one of them during her tight opening set. MSG lit up with camera flashes the instant Ms. Sparks appeared on stage (wearing a sick-looking feather skirt) to sing "One Step at a Time." The crowd was less enthusiastic about the pair of newer album deep cuts she tossed into the set (girl's gotta sell her new record!), but once she finished with a one-two-three punch of "Battlefield," "Tattoo" and "No Air," the room was bouncing and singing in unison. It didn't hurt that Sparks sounded spectacular live, even with her ear monitor flying off two songs in. She is a fantastic addition to the Circus tour.

Thursday, Aug 20 2009 - Jordin Sparks won't open up for Jonas Bros. in Nashville

We’re sure there were plenty of fans looking forward to seeing American Idol winner Jordin Sparks open for her friends the Jonas Brothers at the Sommet Center next Tuesday, so we regret to report that Sparks has had to pull out of the band’s Nashville concert due to a “scheduling conflict.”

The show will continue as planned with the Jonas Brothers, Honor Society and the Wonder Girls at 7 p.m. on August 25.

Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster, Live Nation and the Sommet Box Office.

Sparks has joined the Jonas Brothers in Nashville before. She made a guest appearance at the band’s sold-out Ryman concert at the beginning of the year, collaborating with them on a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and her own hit “No Air.”

Friday, Aug 14 2009 - Jordin Sparks is joining the 'Circus'

Britney Spears may be the ringmaster, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for another vocal powerhouse under the big top.

Brit's official blog announced today that Jordin Sparks is joining the second-leg of the Circus tour, signing on just in time to hit all of the U.S. hot spots including New York, Los Angeles, and two nights in Las Vegas.

Following in the footsteps of former Circus openers Ciara and the Pussycat Dolls, the 19-year old American Idol champ could not be more thrilled about the pairup, exclaiming: "Britney's show is incredible and for me to be a part of it is a great opportunity."

Sparks released her hit sophomore album, Battlefield, in late July and just wrapped up the North American leg of the Jonas Brothers world tour.

"American Idol" alum Jordin Sparks also nabbed a Dobson song, "Don't Let It Go to Your Head," and Fefe couldn't be more pleased that Jordin put her own twist on the track.

"Jordin Sparks just did [that song], which was on Sunday Love, which was very cool," she said. "She did kind of, like, a more R&B version of it, which I think is really nice, actually. It was really cool that she didn't try and do a rock version of it, and she did what she's more comfortable with, which I thought was awesome."

Friday, Aug 14 2009 - Chart Beat Thurday: Sparks Flies

2007 "American Idol" queen Jordin Sparks collects her fourth consecutive top 10 in as many tries on the Pop Songs/Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, as "Battlefield" charges 11-8. The title track from her sophomore album follows a trio of top 10s last year from her debut self-titled set: "Tattoo" (No. 5), "No Air" (No. 2) and "One Step at a Time" (No. 3).

Sparks is the first "Idol" alumnus to storm the chart with four career-opening top 10s, passing 2006 finalist Chris Daughtry, whose band Daughtry arrived with three: "It's Not Over" (No. 1), "Home" (No. 3) and "Over You" (No. 4). The group's fourth pop single, "Feels Like Tonight," peaked at No. 12.

Monday, Aug 10 2009 - Jordin Sparks thinks Paula Abdul is Irreplaceable

It was only a few weeks ago that Jordin Sparks stopped by the MTV News offices and told us she was rooting for Paula Abdul to stay on "American Idol." Now, with the news that Abdul will not be returning to the show, the "Idol" winner said she can't help but feel like the departing judge is irreplaceable.

"Well, when I first heard the rumor a couple weeks ago, I was just like, 'I really hope it doesn't happen,' " she told MTV News at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles. "Now that she's gone, I don't think anybody will ever be able to replace Paula. She's amazing."

Recalling her days of competing on the show, Sparks noted how helpful Abdul was in keeping the contestants focused and strong. "She's one of the original judges, and from being a contestant ... how stressful the show is and how everything goes, Paula was always there to soften the blow and make sure we were OK."

She felt that with her absence she thinks competing "will be a little bit harder, a little bit crazier for the contestants. ... But we'll see what happens," she added. "I'm still gonna tune in and watch and see what the dynamic will is like."

Even though she's an avid Paula supporter, Sparks still has love for the remaining judges, including Kara DioGuardi, who wasn't even a judge on the show while Sparks was competing. "I'm glad Simon [Cowell], Randy [Jackson] and Kara are coming back. But nobody can replace Paula."

Saturday, Aug 08 2009 - Jordin Sparks: American Idol "Dumb" to Lose Paula!

Jordin Sparks is not happy about the Paula Abdul situation over at American Idol.

"It was dumb on American Idol's part," the winner of season six told us earlier today at 102.7 KIIS-FM's Teen Choice Awards gifting lounge at the W Hotel in Westwood. "I love American Idol and I respect them. It's because of them that I got my start, but Paula was one of the original judges. She helped soften the blow for contestants when we didn't do well. I love Paula.

"The show will definitely not be the same without her, and I feel bad that future contestants will not get to experience having her on the show," she continued. "I'm so sad."

But when the going gets sad, the sad go swagging. Among the free loot that Ms. Sparks picked up at the lounge were a Disney Couture skull wrap, some Too Faced Lash Injection mascara and Metal Eyed Liner and a Graffeeti Remarkable backpack.

Thursday, Aug 06 2009 - Jordin To Attend The VMAs

Last year's ceremony ended with host Russell Brand riding off into he sunset with three-time winner Britney Spears after he mingled with the cast of "Twilight," ribbed on the Jonas Brothers and offended Jordin Sparks. Hard to top that, right? Well, believe it or not, the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards are shaping up to be the most star-studded ceremony in recent memory -- and no, that has nothing to do with the fact we shared a green room with Snoop Dogg last year.

Green Day, Taylor Swift and Pink will perform while Chace Crawford, Jordin Sparks, Katy Perry and Ne-Yo are all confirmed to be attending or presenting. And that doesn't even begin to cover the musicians who will be walking the red carpet because their videos have been nominated.

Saturday, Aug 01 2009 - Jordin Sparks Says Writing Songs For Battlefield Was 'Therapeutic'

For her just-released new album, Battlefield, Jordin Sparks didn't want to rest on her "American Idol"-winning laurels. Much like on her debut album, Sparks contributed to the songwriting on the album, collaborating with writers like Toby Gad and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder.

"I had so much fun doing it. Writing is really therapeutic, I am finding out," Sparks told MTV News. "I've always loved to write. Ever since I was in the fourth grade I've written poetry and I've loved words and language arts. Everybody else in my family thinks I'm crazy, but it was my favorite thing to do."

She admits that initially she didn't think she could combine her passions for words and music until much later on in her life. "And it wasn't until I was a little bit older that I realized you put music to [words] and switch things around a little bit and you have a song," she said. "And I didn't have very much time to write on the first album. I wrote on three songs on that album and then I just hit the ground running, recording at the beginning of this year. It was so fun!"

Needless to say, doing the rounds as an "American Idol" didn't leave a lot of time for work on her first album, and Sparks was happy to contribute more this time around. "Being on 'American Idol,' you win and then you go on the tour," she said. "And it's a little low-key and the fans who voted for you want your music ... and you're trying to record and keep your voice safe on tour. But I'm really proud of the first album."

She's equally proud this time around thanks to her hands-on approach. "I do [have a favorite song and] of course all the ones I wrote had a special place in my heart," she said. "And obviously I love all the songs or they wouldn't be on the record!"

Tuesday, Jul 28 2009 - Sparks continues to be an idol

Grade:B

On her first album, Jordin Sparks made people forget she was an "American Idol" product as she effectively delivered songs such as "No Air," "Tattoo" and "One Step at a Time" that elevated her to Kelly Clarkson's popularity level. On her second album, "Battleground," the 19-year-old Arizona native again showcases soulful pipes that belie her age, releasing one of the best-produced pop albums of the year. Not needing Auto-Tune, Sparks confidently delivers upbeat dance anthems, such as "S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)," which shamelessly steals the infectious hook from Shannon's 80s one-hit wonder, as well as slow ballads such as "The Cure," that will be played at 2010 proms. The album is as edgy as Sparks' purity ring, but it's good, clean and catchy fun.

Sunday, Jul 26 2009 - Jordin Sparks thinks she'll be Russell Brand's new VMA target

At last year's VMAs, after Russell Brand took some time out to poke fun at the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings, Jordin Sparks took to the stage to present an award. With a slightly surprised John Legend at her side, Sparks proclaimed to the world how she felt about Brand's comments.

"I just have one thing to say about promise rings," she said during the telecast. "It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody — guy or girl — wants to be a slut."

Now, nearly one year later and with a new Video Music Awards approaching, it's been announced that Brand will be back as host for the big night, and Sparks is confused about the decision.

"Why? I'm just asking why," she told MTV News about his return. "I just think it's going to be really funny, 'cause I think I'm going to go, but it's going to be funny to see what he pulls out of his sleeve, 'cause does he have any other jokes besides the sexual ones?"

She said she didn't mean any harm toward Brand's sense of humor but hopes that he'll have some new tricks for this year's show in New York. "Nothing mean about it," she said. "I'm just asking. It's an honest question."

There's always a possibility the Jonas Brothers will be back for this year's show as well, but does she think they'll be at the top of his joke list this year? "He'll probably target me for saying that," she laughed. "It's OK, Russell. I can take it. I got my armor."

Thursday, Jul 23 2009 - Jordin Sparks downplays racy lyrics in FeFe Dobson cover

Jordin Sparks is not a girl, but not yet a woman, and on her just-released Battlefield album the 19-year-old is eager to prove that she's matured since becoming the youngest "American Idol" winner in 2007.

One track, a cover of Fefe Dobson's "Don't Let It Go to Your Head," even has the pop star cooing stanzas like "So what if I want to kiss/ From your toes up to your lips/ It don't mean that you've had me yet/ You're gonna be good, I bet."

But Jordin assures her fans that the song isn't as risqué as it seems. "There are some things that could be taken the wrong way," Sparks told MTV News, "but the way I sing them, it doesn't mean that!"

In other words, Jordin's growing up, but not too fast. As she sheepishly put it while raising her purity-ring-wearing hand, "I'm 19! Hi!"

Turns out Jordin's connection to the song goes way back. As an eighth-grader in Arizona, Jordin immediately fell in love with Dobson's song and image. "It was so cool because she looked like me! And I was like, 'Whoa! That's so awesome!' " Sparks gushed.

Fefe's music even followed Jordin as she joined the retail workforce. "I remember working at my job ... folding jeans and hearing that song play every day, like, five times a day. And I was like, 'This song is so awesome!' And that was three years ago! I bought the single and everything!"

So when album producers began pitching tracks to Sparks, the American Idol was pretty freaked out that her personal idol had offered up her song as a potential album cut. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? I can sing this song, really? You sure she's not gonna be mad?' It was just really cool to be able to do it."

Jordin is featured on the main page of Billboard.com! Billboard is giving you the chance to listen to an exclusive remix of Jordin's second single, S.O.S (Let The Music Play). Check it out below. The song will surely be a hit!

Short article from Billboard:
It's no surprise that Jordin Sparks was new to Shannon's electro classic "Let the Music Play" - after all, she was born years after the 1983 track was a top ten smash on Billboard's Hot 100. But now the 19-year old "American Idol" winner, whose self-titled 2007 debut went platinum, is growing up and branching out from the soulful jams that put her on the map. Sparks' latest, "Battlefield," is released this week, and the first single "S.O.S. (Let The Music Play)," which reworks Shannon's track, finds the the young singer venturing out onto the dancefloor. Exclusively right here on Billboard.com, listen to a special remix of the song by Matt Pendergast.

Thursday, Jul 23 2009 - Baring their souls: Making Sparks

Jordin Sparks has just become my favorite "American Idol" on the basis of her sophomore set, "Battlefield" (19/Jive, B). Wow can this girl sing, with a bright, piercing tone plus warm, honeyed backing harmonies. (And it doesn't seem to matter who's written or done the arranging - T-Pain, Ryan Tedder, Dr. Luke or Sparks herself; most tunes are scorched with heavy synthesized strings, resounding keyboards and brass.)

The title track sets the tone for this treatise on fighting for the wrong guy. But by album's end, thankfully, Sparks is reconciled to cut her losses and start again with the tenderhearted "Faith" (been listening to Randy Newman?) and a healthy dose of "The Cure."

Thursday, Jul 23 2009 - Songwriter/Producer Dapo Torimorio on 'No Parade'

Torimiro's latest track, ''No Parade,'' a song on Grammy-nominee Jordin Sparks' just-released sophomore album, BATTLEFIELD (Released July 21, 2009), is receiving positive buzz as a stand-out power ballad. Currently on tour with the Jonas Brothers, the season six ''American Idol'' winner describes her new album as reflecting growth and maturity.

Torimiro wrote and produced ''No Parade'' along with Oscar-nominated songwriting duo Scott Cutler and Anne Preven (''Listen,'' sung by Beyoncé Knowles in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.) Of his work with Jordin Sparks, Torimiro expresses, "Jordin is an incredibly talented artist, and she was a delight to work with."

Monday, Jul 20 2009 - Entertainment Weekly's pick of the week

Here are more EW Picks for the week of July 20:

Music

"Battlefield," Jordin Sparks (out Tuesday). That the opening guitar line of "Walking on Snow" -- the first track on Jordin Sparks' sophomore set -- sounds like a close cousin of the riff that kicks off Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" should come as no surprise. One couldn't blame Sparks, "American Idol's" sixth-season champ, for attempting to mirror the career trajectory of the original-flavor "Idol": a decently received debut followed up by a pop masterpiece with multiplatinum sales. "Battlefield" contains enough potential hits to keep the singer in heavy rotation until well into "Idol's" 10th season.

Thursday, Jul 16 2009 - EW Music Review: Battlefield

That the opening guitar line of ''Walking on Snow'' — the first track on Jordin Sparks' sophomore set — sounds like a close cousin
of the riff that kicks off Kelly Clarkson's ''Since U Been Gone'' should come as no surprise. One couldn't blame Sparks, American Idol's sixth-season champ, for attempting
to mirror the career trajectory of the
original-flavor Idol: a decently received debut followed up by a pop masterpiece with
 multiplatinum sales.

Battlefield certainly delivers on the artistic end: It's packed with more hooks than a
fisherman's tackle box, none better than on the gorgeous title track, which sports a soaring chorus. When Sparks hits that ''Better go and get your armor'' bridge, you can practically feel the wind whipping through your hair.

Second single ''S.O.S. (Let the Music Play),'' with its refrain copped from Shannon's 1983 dance classic, may not be thrillingly original, but resistance is futile when Sparks, showing heretofore unseen vocal dexterity, takes to the dance floor to ward off a vixen who's barking up the wrong boyfriend.

Battlefield actually contains enough
potential hits to keep the singer in heavy
rotation until well into Idol's 10th season: The music-box piano on ''No Parade'' breaks your heart even before she gets to the bruising chorus, while ''Watch You Go'' recasts her as a fickle R&B temptress. Sparks even co-penned four tracks, including ''Faith,'' the best AI anthem the show has never had. Kara DioGuardi, you've been warned. A–

Monday, Jul 13 2009 - Jordin Sparks at peace with 'Battlefield'

Jordin Sparks' sophomore album, "Battlefield," was much more peaceable to make than its title might imply. In fact, the season six "American Idol" champ says the set, due out July 21, was significantly less chaotic to make than her platinum 2007 debut.

"With the first album, right after we got off the 'American Idol' tour...they were like, 'OK, they want your music NOW and you have to record it,'" Sparks told Billboard.com during a conference call with reports. "I literally think I recorded the album in a little over 20 days...This time I got to take my time, and if I recorded a song and didn't like it, I was able to say, 'OK, don't like this one' or let it grow with me a little bit."

Best of all, Sparks added, was she was able to write more songs this time out, four of which made the album with two others being used as promotional tracks. "I'm excited for fans to hear my heart and hear what I've been thinking," she says, " 'cause it has been about two years (since 'Jordin Sparks'). I've grown up a little bit and gone through a couple of things, so I'm excited to see what people think."

Sparks recorded "Battlefield" -- whose title track is No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- between January and June and chose the 12-song list from nearly 40 that she worked on. Writers and producers on the album include OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, StarGate, T-Pain and Dr. Luke, and the set also includes a cover of Fefe Dobson's "Don't Let It Go to Your Head," which Sparks said "I had on my iPod for the longest time." There is, she says, growth and maturity -- as well as a step in a dancier direction on "S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)," which samples the Shannon hit that Sparks was unaware of until she recorded the song -- but Sparks says that ultimately she's "still just the ballad-singer girl from 'American Idol.'"

"That's how people fell in love with me on 'Idol' and how I came up," she explains. "That's what's on this album...I don't talk about things I don't know about; sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, I don't know about any of those things. I just talk about things that are kind of universal -- love, friendship, things like that. I think the world needs to hear some of that...something good and something happy."

Sparks is in the midst of touring with the Jonas Brothers and, she said, loving the opportunity to get in front of their audience. "It's been awesome," Sparks said. "I've known the boys for two years now; with this tour it's so great to get to know them individually 'cause I've known them as the group...And professionally, I'm so blessed and so lucky to be on this tour. I'll be in front of a little over a million people this summer. What more can I ask for?"

Monday, Jul 13 2009 - Traveling with the stars: Jordin Sparks

American Idol Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks' second album, Battlefield, drops June 21. The 19-year-old travels frequently — currently she's touring the United States with the Jonas Bros. — but continues to live at home with her family in Arizona. She shares her travel highlights and tips with Kelly Carter for USA TODAY.

Q: Where have you been recently that you liked or were surprised by?

A: Denver. I've been before but I haven't been able to walk around. We had a day off there. I was walking around and never realized all the free little trams, the cute little side places where you can eat and an outdoor mall. Everybody's really happy there. The air is must be better. It was beautiful. They've got the Rockies and the mountains that I want to see. I want to try rock climbing there, which I've done before. Every time I've done it, I've had a lot of fun. I love the outdoors.

Q: What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

A: I would have to say Hawaii. It was so beautiful. I went when I was nine years old. We went for vacation for about a week. One of my best memories from that trip is the oysters. They say you can crack it open and find the pearl. I cracked mine open and had a black pearl in mine. That was awesome. My mom put it on a ring and I still have it. It was so much fun, not to mention beautiful.

Q: What's the most surprising/unexpected place you're ever visited and why?

A: Africa. I went at the First Lady's (Laura Bush) request at the time. We went to help spread awareness about malaria. It was amazing. It was the first time I had ever gone anywhere outside of the United States besides Mexico, but that doesn't really count. I was in Ghana. President Bush did a press conference or speech there and I got to sing the national anthem in front of him. I was really honored. It's the President of the United States.

Q: What's your favorite vacation spot and why?

A: This is going to be funny but Arizona, which is where I live. I barely get to be there anymore so when I go back I consider it a vacation. Even if I didn't live there it would be one of my favorites just because it's so beautiful. It's got so many great places: Flagstaff if you want to ski, Sedona if you want to go exploring — and the Grand Canyon. It does get hot but there's a water park five minutes from my house. I love being able to go back home. I'm still at the house in Arizona that I was in before Idol happened. My room is still exactly the same and I love that. I'm always on the road. I've gotten to the point where I wake up and I don't know where I am or why my alarm is going off. It's such a weird and scary feeling.

Q: Can you offer an insider tip or recommendation for your favorite vacation place?

A: If you come to Arizona during the summer, I would recommend one of the three water parks. If you're a golfer, we have great, great golf courses — a ton to choose from. If you're coming for a spa day then I would recommend the Phoenician. If you want to shop, I recommend Scottsdale Fashion Square. If you're outdoorsy and want to explore I would say get up to the Grand Canyon. It's gorgeous and so vast. If you want to walk around the Grand Canyon, come during the spring when it's really, really nice — or any other time that is not summer.

Sunday, Jul 12 2009 - Sparks learns to fly

Jordin Sparks has found that she has to be tough to survive in the music business, writes Nui Te Koha. JORDIN Sparks has her battles. ``Anything in life can become a battlefield,'' she says. ``It can be a relationship with friends or family. It can be your health or job. ``I've certainly had my battles, although,'' she smiles, ``my career has been pretty battle-free.''

Well, almost. Sparks, 19, former American Idol winner and global pop star, grabbed headlines last year when she snapped over a joke about chastity.
Sparks, a Christian, is saving sex for marriage. But when comic Russell Brand mocked those morals and the symbolic promise ring Sparks
wears she retaliated. ``I just have one thing to say about promise rings,'' Sparks said. ``It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut.''

Today, Sparks quotes a line from the title track of her new album, Battlefield: ``You better go and get your armour.'' To Sparks, it is a memo-to-self about toughening up for the battlefield of fame and celebrity. But, sometimes, armour is not enough. For this conversation, advance troops (in the form of Sparks' management) warn any questions about ``virginity'' will leave interviewers on the phone alone. ``I get my armour on because the media talks about me,'' Sparks says. ``I get my armour on for when that time comes. ``But, hey, people are going to talk. I'll let it hit my armour, let it fall away to the side, and not let it affect me at all.

Monday, Jul 06 2009 - Jonas Brothers a cultural phenomenon

Jordin Sparks acted as hype-woman to open the show with a 25-minute set of mainstream radio-flavoured R&B and pop, showcasing her big voice and spunky personality that helped her win the sixth season of American Idol.

Having gone through the American Idol hit-making machine, Sparks, 19, knows how to work a crowd. She succeeded in getting many young fans out of their seats and dancing while prancing around the stage in high-heels, a short black skirt and a sparkly fingerless glove on her left hand ala Michael Jackson and Beyonce.

Immediately following Sparks, Korean girl group Wonder Girls performed a quick song then fled before commercials for Disney products played on the screens. The crowd screamed whenever the brothers were on, even for a Burger King commercial, which they sang along to.

Wednesday, Jun 24 2009 - 24 seconds with Jordin Sparks

At just 19 years of age, Jordin Sparks has already accomplished a lot in her musical career thus far. As the Season Six winner of ‘American Idol’, she’s already garnered a Grammy nomination, became the youngest person in history to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl, plus had her debut album certified platinum last year.

Performing Monday and Tuesday with the Jonas Brothers in Vancouver at GM Place, Joe Leary spent 24 Seconds with Jordin Sparks.

24: When you accomplish so much as you have thus far, the downside is that your schedule doesn’t really allow you the opportunity to enjoy the cities you travel to.

JS: It’s definitely bittersweet. I get to say that I’ve gone to all of these places; I’ve been to Europe, Australia and all of these places, but at the same time, I couldn’t tell you one thing about a city I’ve visited and it’s so sad. And if I do have time to explore, it’s very fast-paced and any extra time I have, I’m trying to sleep. It is crazy but I’m hoping I will have a little bit of time off to see Vancouver.

Wednesday, Jun 24 2009 - Jordin Sparks joins forces with Just Born candies of Bethlehem

A former American Idol and a candy brand from Bethlehem are heading out on the road together this summer. Mike and Ike Candies (with its charitable partner Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer) will join youngest American Idol winner Jordin Sparks with a 53-foot tour vehicle making stops in most of her concert cities, a news release says.

Sparks is set to release an album, "Battlefield," on July 21 and is out on the road with the Jonas Brothers. The tour will come to Philadelphia's Wachovia Center on July 23 and 24.

The Mike and Ike/Sparks tour vehicle is equipped with a green screen photo booth and a sampling tent, the Just Born folks say. It would have been cool if Jordan and the brothers could have penciled in a stop at the home of Mike and Ike. Keep us posted Just Born if something like that manages to come together.

According to Donald Houston, senior brand manager for Mike and Ike, Jordin is a longtime fan of the candy. Aw. Sweet!

Sparks is growing up since winning the Idol title in 2007. Her single "Battlefield" is about fighting for a relationship. She performed it on "American Idol," in May. If you haven't heard it yet, here's a video. You go girl. He isn't worth fighting with!

She is the daughter of former pro football player Phillippi Sparks, who played for nearly a decade with both the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. I'm sure dad taught our girl how to take care of herself.

Saturday, Jun 20 2009 - Jonas Brothers put on larger-than-life show at Dallas Stadium

The stage, three octagons stationed smack in the middle of the stadium floor, provided plenty of room for spectacle, from a cool feature that showered ribbons of water shaped as hearts, letters and strings to a crane that extended Kevin and Joe over the audience.

But perhaps the grandest piece of eye-popping scenery was the surprise appearance of teen queen Miley Cyrus during an encore performance of "Before the Storm" with ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas. Everybody went nuts when she emerged to sing the power ballad.

Another memorable moment came when opening act Jordin Sparks of American Idol fame returned to the stage to sing "Battlefield," her new single, with a little help from the JoBros.

Sparks could have easily been onstage a little longer. She was impressive, what with her strong pipes and earthy, spunky demeanor. She came off genuine singing her signature tunes "Tattoo," "No Air" and during the effervescent "Young and in Love."

Saturday, Jun 20 2009 - Idol champ Sparks ready for battle

Even Jordin Sparks knows how giddy she sounds.

As the 19-year-old "American Idol" champ rattles off a list of favorite tracks from her new album "Battlefield" -- due out July 21 on 19 Recordings/Jive Records -- her excitement is contagious. "I can't wait for you to hear them," she says. "I'm sure you can hear the smile in my voice."

There are plenty of reasons why Sparks is so happy. She's been able to give her second set more attention than her 2007 self-titled debut, which was recorded in four weeks and rushed to stores soon after the Phoenix, Ark., native won "American Idol." That album sold 1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

This time, Sparks spent four months writing and recording, entering the studio in January. "I knew I'd be able to get more involved because we had the time," Sparks says. "It's an amazing feeling to put my experiences on paper, and all of a sudden it becomes a song."

Like Sparks' debut, "Battlefield" leans heavily toward midtempo pop ballads with some songs skewing into R&B territory. The title track, produced and co-written by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week after Sparks introduced it on "Idol."

Another standout track is the Dr. Luke/T-Pain collaboration "Watch You Go," the only song that features another artist. "It's got a slow, urban vibe," Sparks says of the song, "but don't worry -- I don't think my voice is in AutoTune."

Choosing "Battlefield" as the first single was a bold decision, since the song finds Sparks straying from her cheery demeanor and singing assertively about the dark side of love. Her new manager says it fit with their strategy to present Sparks in a new light.

Wednesday, Jun 17 2009 - Jordin Sparks' New Report: Black Eyed Peas & JB

The New Music Report is pleased to welcome a special guest host for this week’s guide to the best fresh releases: American Idol winner and “Tattoo” singer Jordin Sparks.

Up first, Sparks praises Will.i.am’s production on the Black Eyed Peas’ brand-new Number One album The E.N.D. “It’s been way too long without the Black Eyed Peas,” she says, admitting her latest obsession is the group’s throbbing banger “Boom Boom Pow.”

Sparks also shouts out the Jonas Brothers’ Lines, Vines and Trying Times, and draws attention to the track “Don’t Charge Me With the Crime,” which includes a cameo by Common. “The Jonas Brothers … Common — would anybody ever think that? I don’t know,” she says. Full disclosure: Sparks is going on tour with Jonas Brothers and says she’s looking forward to hearing their latest and songs from their first and second albums all summer long.
